Treasures of the Deep

£1,009.00

Artist’s acrylics on stretched canvas, built up with many layers of paint.

110.94 x 87.63cm (43.5 x 34.5″).

The title of this painting is based on the Shakespearean passage:

Full fathom five thy father lies,
Of his bones are coral made,
Those are pearls that were his eyes,
Nothing of him that doth fade
but doth suffer a sea change,
into something rich and strange.

A modern version of this (which lacks the poetic feel) is:

Your father lies five whole fathoms below,
His bones have turned to coral now.
His eyes have turned to pearls.
There’s nothing left of him,
He’s undergone a complete sea change
and become something rich and strange.

I originally called it something rich and strange. For me, both names denote the rich treasure in this piece.
